behind-the-scenes chronicle of upcoming horror Hallows Point
The film is cast with a legion of horror veterans:

Christa Campbell (2001 MANIACS, 2002 MANIACS, THE WICKER MAN remake, DAY OF THE DEAD remake). Ms. Campbell is the only authentic femme fatales who's exclusively linked to horror movies (i.e. Grade A & B+ commerce). (Pic 1)
Angela Austin (BELLY OF THE BEAST) (Pic 2)
Tom Nowicki (THE PUNISHER, FRANKENSTEIN [2004], REMEMBER THE TITANS)
David Naughton (star of AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON)
Jim Fitzpatrick (SATAN'S LITTLE HELPER, "Commander" Williams on the STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE series)
Robin Hines (VAMPIRE BATS)
Alexxus Young (ARACHNIA, TWO FRONT TEETH) (Pic 3)
(Hallows Point director Jeffrey Lynn Ward featured on pic 4)

An abridged synopsis:
"Welcome to Hallows Point… a small town with a terrible past and a future that is cursed.

It started as a harmless bet but for a group of Hallows Point High students, this Halloween will turn into the ultimate nightmare. Trapped in an abandoned schoolhouse with an evil they helped create, but cannot defeat, the students are ill-prepared for their last lesson… in terror!

Twelve high school students lock themselves into an abandoned schoolhouse on Halloween night and accidentally resurrect their former biology teacher who was a serial killer. The teacher, Nathanial Raber, is all too willing to come back and give these poor unfortunate souls their final exam."

In regard to Nathanial Raber, the HALLOWS POINT bogeyman, director Jeffrey Lynn Ward offers the following summary:

"Raber starts off as a serial killer but that doesn’t make him interesting; what makes him interesting is that he was a high school biology teacher. Here he was, right under the noses of these kids, and no one suspected he was a monster! Unfortunately, the kids accidentally resurrect him and he’s all too willing to come back and teach them a final lesson. I think that 'biology teacher-turned-bogeyman' transition is something that everyone can relate to; everyone who has gone to high school probably envisioned one of their teachers as evil or dastardly. I thought that sort of identification was cool. I didn’t want some huge guy in a hockey mask who hangs out in the woods, I wanted somebody who intertwines with your life."

Mr. Ward also helmed THE DWELLING, a Satanic confection that starred B-movie icon Michelle Bauer (HOLLYWOOD CHAINSAW HOOKERS, SORORITY BABES IN THE SLIMEBALL BOWL--RAMA) and Burt Ward.

Some not so rocky horror - Death Note review
Horror, as a genre, drifts naturally toward cheese and camp. The scares that raised goose pimples in the first series installment draw grins and groans in the fourth -- or 14th.

The devilish Ryuku, voiced by Shido Nakamura, and Tatsuya Fujiwara in "Death Note" (c) 2006 "DEATH NOTE" FILM PARTNERS.

J-Horror resisted this drift by opting for the mundanely familiar and psychologically plausible over Halloween party flash and foolishness. The settings were moldy suburban houses or apartment buildings, not haunted mansions, and the scares came from black shapes glimpsed from the corner of the eye, not grinning monsters with edged weapons jumping from behind a door.

By this standard, Shusuke Kaneko's "Death Note" -- a two-part film based on the best-selling Takeshi Obata manga -- is not J-Horror at all. In fact, it doesn't fit neatly into the horror bin, period, being a mix of cop thriller, seishun eiga (youth movie) and two-player arcade game, wrapped in a stylish manga-esque package.

Released June 17, "Death Note" bumped "The Da Vinci Code" as No. 1 at the local box office and is on its way to becoming the decade's biggest Japanese horror(ish) hit. It has accomplished this feat while violating a key genre rule: Its hero, a brilliant college student named Raito (which means "Light") Yagami (Tatsuya Fujiwara), is also its villain.

Many a movie hero flirts with the dark side, but with Raito, it's love at first sight. When he finds a mysterious notebook with "Death Note" on the cover and learns that he can kill with it simply by writing the victim's name in it (and following certain rules explained in slightly fractured English), shock quickly gives way to what can only be called devilish glee. When the notebook's real owner makes his appearance -- a three-meter-tall "god of death" named Ryuku, who looks like a heavy metal vocalist from Hell -- Raito barely bats an eye. Ryuku (a CG creation voiced by Shido Nakamura) soon becomes his winged familiar -- and the closest thing he has to a friend.

Raito's first victims are criminals who presumably deserve their names in his book of death, but when the cops, led by Raito's straight-as-an-arrow detective father (Takeshi Kaga of "Iron Chef" fame), start closing in with the help of a reclusive slacker genius named only L (Kenichi Matsuyama), he becomes their deadliest enemy, with nary a flicker of doubt or regret.

The film's true focus, however, is less the struggle between good and evil (or rather shades of moral gray) than the battle of wits between Raito and L, with the cops serving mostly as foils. A feisty woman journalist (Asaka Seto) starts putting two and two together, but she is no match for Raito's diabolical wiles. Meanwhile, Raito's high-minded girlfriend (Yuu Kashii) serves as a voice of conscience that goes unheard and unheeded.

The battle (or rather, two-player game) has its fascinations, but CG whiz Kaneko ("Azumi 2," "Gamera 3") and scriptwriter Tetsuya Oishi are presumably saving their biggest scenes for part two, which opens in November. So part one is mostly build up, with little real tension. Also the battle between the cool, heartless killer and the junk-food-loving, asocial brainiac is bloodless. Literally so -- most of the victims keel over from heart attacks. At least they don't dissolve into clouds of pixels.

Pulse Director Faces His Demons
While we wait for Dimension to finally get around to releasing Pulse (they just changed the date, again, this time to August 25th), the boys at B-D got chatting with the film’s director, Jim Sorenzo, and discovered what his next project with Dimension will be.

"[I’m working on] a book that I optioned that’s set up through Dimension called Demons. John Shirley wrote it, which is fantastic," he told the site. "It’s basically about demons invading our world from another dimension and kind of similar to this but its much more colorful, a lot of special effects and it’s very cool. Its like Independence Day meets... well demons invade the world."

If the name John Shirley rings a bell, there’s good reason. The prolific author has written tons of books through his career, including a collaboration with Ed Lee and the Constantine novelization.

Both an anamorphic widescreen and a fullscreen version will be available according to Davis DVD with features like a commentary from the director, deleted and extended scenes, an alternate ending, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and more. Nothing too exciting there, much like the film itself.

Director Kitamura Surprises Audiences in Hollywood
The American premiere of AZUMI was almost sneaked onto the Egyptian theater on Tuesday night, July 25, 2006, by AsiaVision. The presentation was originally described as an advanced screening of the 2003 teen samurai adventure AZUMI. However that night, the presentation was described as the “American premiere” with surprise guest director Ryuhei Kitamura. Mr. Kitamura spoke briefly to the audience before the screening describing how his self-produced gore-fest VERSUS lead to being chosen to direct AZUMI by producer Mata Yamamoto. During his comments, Mr. Kitamura affectionately teased Mr. Yamamoto, who was also in attendance but did not address the crowd.

In July, AsiaVision brought AZUMI to high profile presence at Anime Expo in Anaheim California and two weeks later at the San Diego ComicCon. Mr. Kitamura was present at both promotional events. While there was some indication he might be at the Egyptian showing, there was no announcement from the American Cinematheque.

Earlier in July the American Cinematheque simply invited members to the July 25 showing of AZUMI. The July 21 edition of the LA Weekly printed an offer to admit one (with the ad) plus a guest, describing the event as an “advanced screening.” The large turnout of viewers appeared pleased by the surprise premiere, the surprise appearance of Mr. Kitamura and of course enjoyed the slickly produced samurai assassin swordplay.

During the program, no mention was made of GODZILLA FINAL WARS; however that movie’s American star Don Frye was spotted in the crowd. Mr. Frye said he had been invited by Mr. Kitamura to attend and just hang out with his old friend.

The subtitled print was shown at the Egyptian but the newly dubbed version will be released in American theaters. AZUMI began a run at the West L.A. Nuart Theater. AsiaVision is the live action feature branch of Urban Vision Entertainment Inc. AZUMI marks the launch of AsiaVision’s theatrical releases.

Website and Teaser For Norweigian Survival Horror Fritt Vilt
A teaser trailer has turned up online for Norweigian survival horror film Fritt Vilt and it looks like impressive stuff, combining some beautiful photography (of some rather attractive Viking lasses) with a dark, gritty edge. Here's the synopsis from the Norweigian Film Institute:

It’s midwinter. Five youngsters are heading for the Jotunheimen mountain area to go snowboarding. On the slope, one of them has a bad fall and breaks a leg. There is no sign of any other people around, and their mobile phones are out of range. They catch sight of a mountain hotel in the distance, and decide to find shelter there. The hotel lies emtpy and silent, obviously closed down years ago. The phone lines are dead, and the youngsters realize they have to spend the night in the hotel. But it turns out they’re not alone. In the basement they discover a filthy dungeon of a room, where somebody has recently lived. They find a pile of polaroid photos, which by closer inspection prove to be very different from regular vacation photos... What follows is a battle of life and death, when Norway’s most notorious and determined serial killer plays cat and mouse with the youths. And while their number is diminishing, friendship and courage is put to the test in this roller¨coaster ride of a horror.

New Look at The Girl Next Door
The folks over at ModernCine just dropped Dread Central a line with an update on and a set of new images from their adaptation of Jack Ketchum’s notorious The Girl Next Door, which just wrapped its first week of principal photography.

The film, being made under the direction of Gregory Wilson, stars Blanche Baker, Catherine Mary Stuart, Grant Snow, Blythe Auffarth, and Kevin Chamberlin. All relatively new names in the scene, but that's important with a tale like this; you have to make sure you're not looking at an actor and remembering them from a previous role as it will make the danger they’re in all the more real if they have a fresh face. And the kids in The Girl Next Door face some serious dangers.

They anticipate a finished cut of the film as early as September, if you can believe it. Shooting is set to go on for a few more weeks, and hopefully we’ll learn more about it as it does. The first shots from the film are below, and they look damn fine so far!

Exclusive: Azumi Director Ryuhei Kitamura
Known solely to devout Asian cinephiles for his early movie Versus, Kitamura is the kind of filmmaker that Michael Bay might be if he were Japanese… and talented… but he's a rare breed, making Hollywood-style action movies that still owe much to the traditions of his native country.

A good example of this is his 2003 samurai epic Azumi, based on the comic by Yu Koyama about a teen girl who is trained since childbirth as a samurai assassin. The success of that movie in his homeland led to Godzilla: Final Wars, meant to be the last Godzilla movie but clearly the best one in years, paying simultaneous homage and spoof to the great Godzilla movies of the '70s.

To commemorate Azumi finally arriving on our shores, Kitamura showed up at Comic-Con in San Diego last week to show the film, and ComingSoon.net/SuperheroHype.com had a rare chance to sit down to talk to him about his two high profile movies. One of the few Japanese directors we've interviewed who speaks fluent English, Kitamura has yet to find the right English project to blow American moviegoers' socks off, but in the meantime, he's built up a fine collection of action movies that should insure that happens very soon.

Raimi's 30 Days of Night Has Its Leads
Things have been quiet on the 30 Days of Night front for quite some time now, which is to be expected with director / producer Sam Raimi still hard at work whipping the third Spider-Man film into shape. That the adaptation of Steve Nile's graphic novel of a northern Alaska town beseiged by vampires was coming with Raimi at the controls - at least as producer, reports have placed either Raimi or Hard Candy director David Slade in the director's chair for this - has been known for quite some time, as was the news that Josh Hartnett would be playing the lead role of town sheriff. But now we've got a female lead announced in Australian starlet Melissa George, and word that Raimi will be rolling into this one just as soon as he wraps work on Spider-Man. Music composed by JEFF GRACE

Exploring even darker territories, composer Jeff Grace moves from Middle-Earth and Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings trilogy to the world of zombies and vampires in the acclaimed cult horror film The Roost, directed by Ti West. Grace, who worked as an assistant for Academy Award-winning composer Howard Shore on numerous scores including all three Lord of the Rings soundtracks, is now pursuing a film composition career in his own right. His refreshingly modern horror score for The Roost, written for a string quartet using many experimental avant garde techniques, is a very impressive work that ranks among the best of scores written in the low budget horror genre...

Batman Sequel Update
A few more kernels of information about the planned sequel to Batman Begins have surfaced online today. The Batman-on-Film.com website has heard, as almost everyone has by now, that Heath Ledger is going to play The Joker in the next movie.

The site claims The Joker will be just one of the villains in a larger story and that he won't appear until halfway through the movie, a la Batman in Begins. He is also expected to have a backstory.

"From what I've heard about the direction of the film expect The Joker to be very creepy and very extreme," a trusted source for BoF advised the site, claiming that Ledger's Clown Prince will be totally unlike Jack Nicholson's portrayal in the 1989 film.

BoF's source suggests, "Heath Ledger is perfect for the role as he has never played this kind of part before which is what Nolan was after. Think about it if you see Sam Rockwell or Robin Williams or even Hugo Weaving, you'd know exactly how they would play the role before even seeing the film and that's not very intriguing for fans is it? I have a feeling Paul Bettany was out of the mix after his performance in The Da Vinci Code."

Russia’s Dead Daughters to be remade in U.S.
Better steer a wary eye to Russia these days, because it appears that’s where the latest wave of Eurohorror is stemming from. In the wake of NIGHT WATCH and its forthcoming sequel DAY WATCH comes DEAD DAUGHTERS, which is poised to hit theaters in its native country August 31 (you can see its Russian-language official site here).

These days, it’s inevitable that a Stateside production house would scoop up the rights for an American translation, and Fango has learned that Gold Circle Films (the outfit behind WHITE NOISE and SLiTHER) has taken that honor. Newcomer Jared Rivet is penning the adaptation; it’s his second script in development after KILLERS OF THE DEAD, a zombie tale that has generated a curious murmur around Hollywood and is being produced by Brian Witten and directed by JC Barrows.

The original DAUGHTERS, written and helmed by Pavel Ruminov, tells of three young girls murdered by their mother. Fueled by vengeance ( la THE GRUDGE?), the ghosts of the trio return years later to exact their own form of justice. Those who spy their latest victim alive become targets themselves and are watched for three days. If this person does any wrong, the spectral sisters hold a “merciless trial.” Central Partnership is responsible for the film’s overseas release; there’s no word yet on who will ultimately distribute or direct DAUGHTERS’ U.S. take, but Paul Brooks is producing with Zak Kadison.

$LA$HER$ director's End of the Line in Toronto
Maurice Devereaux, the Montreal-based filmmaker behind BLOOD SYMBOL, LADY OF THE LAKE and $LA$HER$ (the latter two released by Fango Video), said that his latest chiller END OF THE LINE just snagged a slot at the Toronto International Film Festival, premiering in the Canada First section. “This is quite an honor,” Devereaux explains, “as very few indie filmsand even fewer horror filmsare chosen to be part of this prestigious festival, the biggest one in North America and second only to Cannes worldwide.”

END OF THE LINE, which Devereaux wrote, directed and produced, starts with Karen (ETERNAL’s Ilona Elkin), a young nurse at a psychiatric ward, boarding the last subway train of the night. The ride comes to a sudden stop in the middle of a tunnel, and the passengers start getting brutally murdered, leaving Karen and a small group of survivors to “face supernatural forces and homicidal religious cult members, as well as their own fears and suspicions of Armageddon, in order to survive,” according to the synopsis. The cast also includes $LA$HER$’ Neil Napier, Nicolas Wright, Emily Shelton, Tim Rozon, Nina M. Fillis and Joan McBride, with special FX by Devereaux’s frequent collaborator Adrien Morot, whose work can also be seen this fall in Renny Harlin’s THE COVENANT and Darren Aronofsky’s THE FOUNTAIN.

“For those who’ve seen my previous work,” Devereaux says, “this film is a major step up for me in terms of overall quality, as it was my first time working with a union cast of respected professional actors and state-of-the-art equipment. So in many ways, I consider END OF THE LINE to be my first ‘real’ feature film. Hopefully, the Toronto screening will help the film secure a theatrical distribution, and that will lead to box-office success! Money!! Fame!!! Women!!!! Power!!!!! Followed, of course, by offers to direct remakes of old horror films we loved as kids,” he laughs.

But for now, he’s concentrating on wrapping up postproduction in time for END OF THE LINE’s fest debut. “More info will follow,” he says, “after I’ve stopped working 18 hours a day, seven days a week to finish the film!”

Resident Evil: Extinction Coming Sept. 07
Sony's Screen Gems has set a September 7, 2025 release date for the anticipated third installment, Resident Evil: Extinction, directed by Russell Mulcahy and written by Paul W.S. Anderson. The video game adaptation will star Milla Jovovich, Oded Fehr, Mike Epps, Ali Larter, Chris Egan, Ashanti, Iain Glen, Sienna Guillory, Spencer Locke and John Eric Bentley.

The studio will release director Andrew Douglas' Priest on August 17, 2007. Based on the popular Japanese comic, this is the story of a priest (Gerard Butler) who goes against the laws of the church to hunt the vampires who kidnapped his niece.

Screen Gems has also put down the horror-thriller Vacancy, starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Luke Wilson, for an April 13, 2025 release. In the film, a young married couple becomes stranded at an isolated motel and finds hidden video cameras in their room. They realize that unless they escape, they'll be the next victims of a snuff film.

The Black Dahlia Trailer
After what seems like a decade in the making, Brian DePalma's hard-boiled thriller The Black Dahlia is finally making its way to theaters. Let's hope the lengthy delay is not an indication of the film's quality (maybe you saw DePalma's Mission to Mars or Snake Eyes).

The movie stars Aaron Eckhart and Josh Hartnett as LA detectives investigating one of the most notorious unsolved crimes in history, the grisly 1947 murder of actress Elizabeth Short. The movie also stars bosomy beauty Scarlett Johansson and toothsome Hilary Swank (who previously spent some time with Eckhart when they piloted the giant dildo to the center of the earth in The Core). Suspension of disbelief alert: Swank does not look like Mia Kirshner. Sorry.

The twisting tale is based on the novel by James Ellroy, whose own LA Confidential was sort of an indirect sequel.

Kim Ki-duk's "Time" Sold to More Territories than "The Host"

Korean director Kim Ki-duk's latest film "Time", which follows a couple who test their love for each other through plastic surgery, has now been sold to more than 24 territories worldwide, following successful runs at the Cannes and Karlovy Vary International Film Festivals, more than Bong Joon-Ho's acclaimed creature feature "The Host". While it is worth noting that "Time", as with Kim's previous films "Samaritan Girl" and "The Bow" hasn't been sold to North America, this still marks a considerable achievement for a low key and low budget film, and indicates the kind of regard that the director is held in internationally. The film looks like it will finally get a Korean release, though only on 10 or 15 screens, despite the director's own lack of interest in the domestic market.

The Host...DVD
You know by now (The Host) is out in Korea, and to realize that you'd need just a peek at most major Korean Message Boards (like DC), filled with thousands of posts about the little Monster. But no, here's something else which might interest you folks.

Director Bong Joon-Ho spoke a little about the upcoming DVD of his latest film, commenting that they felt really sad about leaving expensive shots of the monster on the cutting floor, as it would be like throwing away 2-300 Million Won. So what? He's putting all of them in the DVD. We're dealing with 10 extra cuts, and although he says they're great little shots, when we see the deleted scenes we'll know why they were cut. Bong also revealed he requested 6.1 Channels audio right from the beginning, so you audiophiles will probably be happy. He also says 'I think this DVD might become reference material in the (Korean) DVD Market. Watching DVD releases today they often seem to have that monotonous, cosmetics-like quality to them. So what we're trying to do is create something interesting to watch. I've started giving material to the DVD production staff ever since we started shooting, just like with (Memories of Murder), and I think this will be even better."

Shape-Shifters Invade Montreal 's The Covenant
According to a Montreal set report from Comingsoon.net/Superherohype.com, Screen Gems upcoming action/horror, The Covenant, had a soundstage set "that looks to be the side of a rocky mountain", 50 feet high and 60 feet wide, while in the background, hanging at 80 feet in the air, was actor Steven Strait, with a crew down below working to create mist, mountain dew and lightning.

Premise of The Covenant follows four fellows, who attend New England's 'Spencer Academy', with each member of the group a descendent of families who settled the 'Ipswich Colony' in the 1600s, inheriting a bloodline containing powers of flying, shape shifting and the energy manipulation of matter.

Director Harlin said that the rig used to harness actor Strait was the same used by Montreal's "Cirque du Soleil". Included in the scene were actors Chace Crawford, Toby Hemingway and Taylor Kitsch.

Taking up a portion of the soundstage was a barn, in which a final fight will have two characters crash into parts of the barn, their eyes turning black before revealing their powers.

Actress Laura Ramsey, will be floating under a 'spell' in the center of the barn while the fight takes place. In order to create a "zen-like flowing", Laura was filmed in a pool, underwater, that will be added to the scene in post. The Covenant opens September 8th.

First report: ’80s horror homage Left For Dead

“C’mon! Come and get me!”

That’s the first thing Fango hears after stepping onto the Hamilton, Ontario set of LEFT FOR DEAD (see more photos below), the debut production of fledgling company Mindscape Films, starring Danielle Harris from HALLOWEEN 4 and 5. Writer/director Chris Harrison is blocking actors for a climactic confrontation with the film’s vengeful killer (identified only as “The Mask,” pictured left and below with Harrison), showing his true colors as he communicates the emotional level he’s looking for in lead actor Steve Byers: “It’s like Tommy Jarvis at the end of JASON LIVES.”

“It’s an ’80s slasher flick,” says the 29-year-old Harrison, who describes horror as his genre of choice. “Five frat boys are stalked by a machete-wielding maniac who is out for revenge after they left him for dead a year earlier. We’re not reinventing the wheel, but we are shining it up a bit. A serious slasher film hasn’t been done in a while.”

When it came to casting, “Adam Dirani, our executive producer, decided we should get some names involved,” Harrison says. “We got interest from Danielle Harris. I’ve loved her since she was a kid, and she’s such a great actress. We wanted somebody who was known within the genre, and she came on to play our leading lady.”

“The shoot has been really easy and really fun,” says Harris, whose last genre appearance was in 1998’s URBAN LEGEND. “I’m so excited to be back doing horror movies.” Of the genre projects she’s been offered lately, LEFT FOR DEAD “was the most classic. It’s very old-school, the way horror movies used to be made. CGI is great, but I kinda like the real thing. They’re doing everything the way it was done 20 years ago, and that’s great.”

Harrison’s commitment to “keeping it real” hasn’t precluded a little creative computer tinkering when it comes to at least one bloody death scene. Digital compositingnot full CGIwill combine two shots into one (“SHAUN OF THE DEAD-style,” explains Harrison), resulting in six inches of machete slicing completely through someone’s ribcage. “I did want to show all of the effects, literally,” he notes. “We don’t hide anything. We wanted to be more violent, because the technology is here to make that happen.”

“We’re trying to keep it as practical as possible, but there’s a little bit of digital work in there too,” says makeup FX artist Carlos Henriques. “It’s a lot of appliances. We have a neck slit, which we just did. We’ve got a machete going into someone’s throat, and when it comes out there’ll be shooting blood, ROBOCOP-stylethis 6-foot spray, like Dario Argento, painting the walls.”

“We’ve also got an exploding head,” producer Ryan Louagie says with enthusiasm. “At one point, the killer jumps on the hood of a car where this couple is making out, takes a shotgun and blows the guy’s head off.”

“MANIAC-style!” Henriques adds with a grin. “Chris, Ryan and I have known each other for many years. A lot of late nights watching the classics. So we’re referencing everything we can. The film is a complete ’80s homage.”

Sony Planning The Grudge 3
Shouldn't be surprised, considering it's all about the cabbage. but interesting to hear that Sony have already started planning for "The Grudge 3" - several months shy of the release of "Grudge 2".

Takashi Shimizu, director of "The Grudge 2" (saw some footage from the film and it looks OK - hopefully, better than the first), told us today that the studio is keen for him to direct the second sequel [as well]. Though he said he'd like to be involved in some capacity - and he isn't ruling out directing it, yet - he would probably only produce it. He seems keen to journey beyond the world of "The Grudge".

Japanese-styled Miyuki wraps; first pics
Fango heard from writer/director Immanuel Martin, who just wrapped production on his independent horror feature MIYUKI and launched a new website for it here, and provided the first photos. “We hope to have a new trailer in about a month,” Martin tells Fango, “and we’re targeting the completion of postproduction for November, in time for AFM.”

MIYUKI stars Yuri Nanami (pictured left) as the titular Japanese exchange student, whose dark past turns the lives of her host family into a living nightmare. “It was quite a challenging production, as we had only 14 shooting days; however we wrapped on schedule,” Martin says. “Also, we had quite an international cast and crew, so at times communication was challenging. From the beginning, I was determined to cast only Japanese nationals for Japanese roles, and I’m very happy with this decision, as this added to the production values and attention to detail. It was trying at times, as we had more than 20 Japanese cast members and some spoke little or no English. Luckily, I had Junichi Kakutani as a script supervisor, who doubled as a liason between the Japanese cast and crew.

“Yuri, our main actress, had very little experience, but delivered a stellar performance as Miyuki. She hails from Shizuoka, Japanwhere, by chance, many of the Japanese cast and crew were from. In addition, we recruited Saki Inoue [pictured at bottom] from Tokyo and LA to play the key supporting role of Eriko, one of Miyuki's nemises, and she also delivered a great peformance. We shot using a relatively new camera, the Sony XDCAM HD format, part of the CineAlta family. This camera was at first hard to get used to, but it turned out to be a great format, and cinematographer Sasha [LIVE FEED] Popove did an awesome job, and the footage looks great. All in all, I’m happy with MIYUKI and confident that it is a fresh and unique take on horror with a Japanese flavor.”

The cast also includes newcomer Barclay Iversen and AMADEUS’ Karl Heinz Teuber. In addition to the official site, you can find out about MIYUKI at its MySpace page

From Dusk 'Til Shaun not gonna happen after all
At a panel at this weekend's San Diego Comic-Con, Director Edgar Wright dispelled rumors of a possible Shaun of the Dead 2, long rumored to be subtitled From Dusk 'Til Shaun. Nick Frost added his own humorous title: Night of the Living Ed. However, humorous titles aside, it looks like the sequel will not be happening.

"Shaun of the Dead 2 seems unlikely," Wright said. "We don't want to do a cash-in."

The director and his troupe of Nick Frost and Simon Pegg are currently collaborating on the action/comedy Hot Fuzz. The trio would like to work on another project together, provided it is right, but no details of such a project were forthcoming.

'Evil Dead' Remake Still in the Cards
During an interview with at this year's San Diego Comic Con, 'Spiderman 3' director Sam Raimi tells B-D that he's really busy with Spidey now... but when he's finished he still plans on remaking The Evil Dead with Ghost House Pictures. He says he wants to find the perfect director and the perfect script writers to make a film that will "really spook the audience." When B-D clarified if in fact the remake will happen, he exclaimed "yes, one day." And if you're wondering about Venom... he looks amazing. More on that soon. 'Spiderman 3' hits theaters next May. Raimi wrote, directed and produced the 1981 film, which tells the tale of a group of friends who go to a cabin in the woods, where they find an unspeakable evil lurking in the forest. One by one, the teens become deadly zombies. With only Ash (Campbell) remaining, it is up to him to survive the night and battle The Evil Dead.

The Grudge 2 Trailer Debuts at Comic-Con
Director Takashi Shimizu showed attendees at the San Diego Comic-Con the trailer to his upcoming horror sequel The Grudge 2 on Sunday. The debut trailer starts with a girl riding in the back of a car with a voice over of her mother speaking to her on the phone - "There has been an accident. Your sister is in the hospital." Turns out, her sister is Sarah Michelle Gellar, who we see next awake but nervous and strapped to a hospital bed. In voice-over, Gellar warns her sister - "Don't go inside that house."

There are several cut scenes of Ju-on style creepiness. Then... and this might be a spoiler for some... we see a shot of Gellar lying on the ground in a pool of her own blood - dead. The sister says in voice-over - "My sister is dead. Why? What do you want?"

More creepy shots including the little boy from the first film, but other 'infected' entities as well. The tagline flashes on the screen in two parts - What was contained... Will be unleashed. More fast cut images followed including someone - rather unnaturally - reaching into a girl-s mouth and a shot of the little boy under desk. The trailer climaxed with the image that appears on the opening page of the official site a close of a portion of the little boy-s face with a red '2' in his eye.

Shimizu - though an interpreter - told the audience that at an early age he didn-t understand why people would pay to be scared, but now he enjoys and is honored to make movies in the genre now.

Tarantino Talks Kill Bill Anime
In addition to showcasing plenty of righteous footage of the upcoming double feature Grind House at his 2006 Comic-Con panel, Tarantino shared that he is interested in expanding the Kill Bill universe with two anime films.

While he has hinted at doing anime to continue the series, he added more detail to his previous comments, stating that he'd like to do two films. The first would be a prequel, focusing on the story of Hatori Hanzo and Bill's rise to power and subsequent fall from grace. The second anime would focus on The Bride character, but no timeframe for this invention was given.

Kill Bill Vol. 1 employed this animated style to tell the story of one of its main villains, O-Ren Ishii. There was no indication if Tarantino would work with the same animator on these projects.

'My Wife Is a Gangster 3' Takes New Direction With Hong Kong Actress
NAMYANGJU, Kyonggi Province, Local gangster comedy "My Wife Is a Gangster (Chopok Manura)" was a huge hit in 2001, drawing over 5 million moviegoers. But as goes with many sequels, the 2003 sequel was disappointing and commercially unsuccessful attracting less than 2 million viewers due to its cliched storyline and jokes that did not distinguish it much from the original.

So what are the makers of its third installment to do, but attempt to infuse something totally new in the upcoming film. The first obvious change is Shu Qi, popular actress from Hong Kong, well known for such films as "City of Glass" (1998), "The Transporter" (2002) and "Three Times" (2005).

Shu replaces South Korean actress Sin Eun-kyeong who played the leading character of a housewife and a tough female boss of a gang. Shin starred as the gangster wife in the two previous serials.

"When I first read the scenario, I didn't feel too stressed as it was a totally new movie (compared to its previous films)", Shu Qi said during a news conference held at the Seoul Studio Complex in Namyangju, Kyonggi Province, where the film was being shot. "You will experience something very exciting in the film".

"Basically, as I can't speak Korean, my role in the film is totally different from Sin's roles", she answered laughing when asked about the differences between her and Shin's characters.

Directed by Jo Jin-kyoo, "My Wife Is a Gangster 3" revolves around Aryong (played by Shu Qi), who flees to Seoul as her father's gang is engaged in a severe conflict with another gang in Hong Kong.

The scene she filmed that day involved Aryong having breakfast in an apartment with Korean gangsters whose mission was to act as her bodyguard, but they find themselves in an awkward situation, finding out another night that she is not just a pretty daughter of a boss of a Hong Kong-based gang but also is good at martial arts.

Director Jo, who made the original, said that the film will be like a comic action version of "Roman Holiday", and he avoided using typical formulas often used in the genre of a gangster comedy.

"Personally, I really like `Roman Holiday'. This film will be like its comic action version", Jo said half-joking. "I'd like to avoid such scenes as gangsters' fighting with scantlings in a warehouse. I'm trying to create my own styles in the film putting hilarious jokes and seriousness".

Along with Shu Qi, the film is full of interesting actors, and they are confident of portraying funny characters. Lee Beom-soo, who played a cruel gangster in his latest action film "The City of Violence", is back as a "faithful" and "kind" gangster, and Hyeon Yeong, popular for her cute voice, plays an ethnic Korean from Yanbian as the Korean translator of Aryong.

New Ed Neal DE RIGUEUR pic; trailer now on-line

Filmmaker William Rot (whose THE JOURNAL OF EDMOND DEYERS appeared on Fango’s last BLOOD DRIVE DVD) gave us an update on DE RIGUEUR, the 20-minute horror short on which he recently wrapped principal photography. A rather unnerving trailer, which he cut together in one day, can be seen on his official site here. The movie stars TEXAS CHAINSAW’s Ed Neal (pictured from the film), Alexandria Bevilacqua, Scott Apple and frequent collaborator Frank Corto, and Rot tells Fango, “For me, working with Ed Neal was a dream come true! He is my favorite villain from my favorite horror film. Plus, he is a super-talented actor. As a director I couldn’t ask for anybody better; Ed just brings so much to the table.”

Enthused with Neal’s performance, Rot reveals that he hopes to work with the actor again and is writing him into the script for PARIS LOST, a feature-length romantic fright film he hopes to shoot next year. “The part is something that will hopefully let him showcase his talents a little more,” Rot says. “It’s a very different kind of role from anything we have seen him play before.”

As for DE RIGUEUR, Rot is looking forward to screening the short on the festival circuit, and says of the rapidly cut trailer, “It's a crazy story! I was helping out the camera department of this new Wong Kar-wai film MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS, and I was talking to Darius Khondji [the cinematographer, whose credits include SEVEN], and he asked me to burn him a DVD of some projects I had done. Since DE RIGUEUR isn’t complete yet, I cut a trailer on my one day off before we went up to Ely, Nevada to finish up working on BLUEBERRY NIGHTS. Darius is my favorite DP of all time, so I wanted to show him the most intense stuff I currently have.”

Day of the Dead - Rhames is Capt. Rhodes
Do you remember Capt. Rhodes? Think every zombie fan does. Well, he was very well portrayed in George Romero's "Day of the Dead" by Joe Pilato. According to Fangoria who talked to screenwriter Jeffrey Reddick the remake, which is scheduled to begin filming in Bulgaria very soon, will star Ving Rhames as the leader of the military unit.

Reddick also revealed that Mena Suvari will play Sarah and Pvt. Miguel Salazar will be portrayed by Nick Cannon. The screenwriter also stated that "Obviously, we’re all extremely excited about landing this cast. Mena Suvari has the intelligence, strength and beauty needed for the role of Sarah, and Ving…well, he’s the man, what more can I say? Nick Cannon is playing Salazar, and people are going to see him in a whole new light after this role."

He also said that "The story is more of a reimagining than a shot-by-shot remake; think the 'Dawn of the Dead' remake, not 'Psycho'. The original 'Day of the Dead' was a great film, and it would be arrogant to think that we could do a scene-by-scene remake of a Romero film with a bigger budget and do it better." Be sure to read the complete article right here.

Well, this means that Ving Rhames will not portray his part from the "Dawn of the Dead" remake again, as some of the fans have thought. Maybe the filmmakers even bring in something from the original screenplay George Romero wrote and didn't find its way to film, because Romero wanted to bring his film unrated to cinemas without editing the movie and therefor the production combany trimmed the budget.

Ghostbusters 3 Talk
Ever since Ghostbusters 2 was released nearly twenty years ago, San Diego's Comic-Con has been a breeding ground for rumor of a possible sequel. Harold Ramis, the director of the first two Ghostbuster movies, indicated recently the sequel was further along than ever, hinting that he would like to cast Ben Stiller as one of the Ghostbusters.

At the Snoop Dogg Hood of Horror panel, Ghostbuster Ernie Hudson added fuel to the rumor fire, when he responded to the "will there be a sequel?" question.

Hudson said: "I've been hearing about Ghostbusters 3 for 20 years… Harold would love to [do it] and Dan would… Bill is the hold-out."

This is in line with statements that Ramis has made, lending credence to the sequel talk, and giving Ghostbuster fans even more to get excited about.

FALLEN ANGELS site on-line; new pics
FALLEN ANGELS writer/director Jeff Thomas checked in to give Fango an update and pics on his genre-star-packed supernatural horror film. “We wrapped May 1,” says Thomas. “The shoot was exhausting, but very rewarding.” He also passed on word that the movie’s official website, featuring more stills, a teaser trailer and lots of other good stuff, is now open here

Filmed at Ohio’s shuttered Mansfield State Reformatory, FALLEN ANGELS toplines Michael (STAR TREK: TNG) Dorn, reality TV star Adrianne Curry, THE DEVIL’S REJECTS’ Bill Moseley (pictured above), Michael (THE HILLS HAVE EYES) Berryman, David (LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT) Hess, Kevin (INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS) McCarthy, Kane (Jason) Hodder, R.A. (LEATHERFACE) Mihailoff, Reggie (PHANTASM) Bannister, Paul (MOTEL HELL) Linke, Daniel (SE7EN) Zacapa, WWE wrestler/Playboy cover girl Christie Hemme and Christopher Knight. “The acting is really going to turn some heads,” Thomas says. “The cast really worked overtime in developing their characters, and it creates this sense of very compelling drama that juxtaposes perfectly with the horror and the violence. Bill Moseley described the film as THE DA VINCI CODE with monsters.”

The story revolves around the unearthing of a legion of demons upon the demolition of a turn-of-the-century prison. Thomas promises graphic violence and gore in spades, thanks to the FX work of Bob Keen. “We have his best work since HELLRAISER on display,” Thomas says. “Bob kept laughing that the MPAA will love the scenes of prolonged torture, but we continued to push the envelope anyway. We have some world-class, striking images that are supported by high-caliber performances and gruesome special effects and kills, all handled in a very serious and surrealistic fashion.”

The filmmaker is currently deep in postproduction, noting that he has “completely immersed [himself] in it since wrapping.” The rough cut currently clocks in at 100 minutes, and Thomas adds, “It moves very quickly, but I want to trim it down a bit more, to about 90 [minutes]. I want audiences not to know what hit them.” Once the movie is locked, Thomas plans to premiere FALLEN ANGELS in one of the larger film festivals, and “as far as distribution is concerned, we [already] have had many offers]. This film has teeth.”

HELLBOY animated site opens; director talks
The heroic demon Hellboy making the leap to animated feature films, and Fango’s been given the heads-up that an official site for his new incarnation has gone live just in time for the San Diego Comic-Con. Click here to pay it a visit. As it turns out, the big red guy will be showcased in two such movies from IDT Entertainment and Revolution Studios; the first, HELLBOY: SWORD OF STORMS, rolls onto the Cartoon Network in October (check your local listings!), and will be followed in 2007 by HELLBOY: BLOOD AND IRON. Spearheaded by HELLBOY feature director Guillermo del Toro and comics creator Mike Mignola, the projects see Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, John Hurt and Doug Jones returning to voice their respective big-screen roles.

The site contains in-depth plot details, downloads and a history of the B.P.R.D. While staying true to the characters, the animated adventures will divert somewhat from the current Hellboy storyline, and timeline, that readers are accustomed to in the comics. “By definition, the films are in their own universe,” says Tad Stones, supervising director of STORMS and IRON. “Professor Broom is alive in our series. The B.P.R.D. [team] are not at their original headquarters, they’re now at the headquarters created in the B.P.R.D. comicsbut pretty much what we created are original stories. And if we hit something from the comic that fit naturally, it was a feeling of, ‘Why re-invent the wheel?’ ”

Expect one or two surprise villains and one popular Hellboy short story to be given their animated due.

SEVERANCE trailer, pics now on-line
Wonder what Chris Smith’s been up to? Sure you do. The CREEP director showed promise with his RAW MEAT-like underground chiller that, for the most part, played it pretty straight. With SEVERANCE, he gets to test his comedic chops and drown them with a deluge of blood. Set to bow in the UK on August 25, the film stars an ensemble castincluding Danny Dyer and Laura (THE FACULTY) Harrisas a group who, as part of a rewarding corporate getaway, venture into the mountains for some “team building” exercises. What they don’t count on is a “group of war-crazed killers intent on revenge.”

Pathe!, the Brit distribution label that formerly carried CREEP, has updated its site with a number of stills from SEVERANCE and have even included a damn effective trailerand check out that poster! You can see it all at the Pathe! website here Magnolia Pictures has SEVERANCE for the U.S.

Warners Doing Doom Patrol

Warner Bros. is bringing DC Comics' The Doom Patrol to the big screen. According to today's Hollywood Reporter, the studio has reportedly hired scribe Adam Turner (Drive, SCI FI's Area 52) to script the adaptation. Akiva Goldsman is producing.

Created by Arnold Drake, The Doom Patrol first appeared in 1963. The story centers around a team of dark heroes bitter about being viewed as "freaks" by the rest of the world. Sound familiar? Well, they were also led by a man in a wheelchair... but the similarities to the X-Men, which was published later that same year, are only surface level.

As the trade says, the chief players in the series are Chief, a paraplegic genius; Elasti-Girl, who can shrink or grow her body; Negative Man, a man in bandages who could release a silhouette form of himself; and Robotman, a former athlete whose brain resides in a robotic body.

The team's notable enemies include the immortal General Immortus, a shape-shifter called Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man (sweet!), and the notorious Brotherhood of Evil, fronted by the Brain, a human brain sustained by technology. Other Brotherhood of Evil members were the human-like gorilla Monsieur Mallah and shape-shifter Madame Rouge.

DC Comics' creative affairs VP Gregory Noveck told THR, "Even in the '60s, Doom Patrol has always been on the edgier fringe in its interpretation of characters. The characters weren't inherently heroes, and that's why they've had longevity and fan support. It's the characters that has attracted writers like Grant Morrison and Geoff Johns to build on their uniqueness."

New Bruce Lee Film
The family of late martial arts legend Bruce Lee have announced their plans to shoot a film which aims to dispell many of the myths and rumours which have sprung up since his untimely death in 1973. Speaking at a gathering to mark the anniversary of the tragic event, Lee's brother Robert said that they would release a book to celebrate his birthday in November, and that the film will be designed to show his childhood and life from the perspective of his family. The film will be shot next year in association with JA Media and in co-operation with brothers Robert and Peter and sisters Phoebe and Agnes, with a view to releasing it in 2008 on the 35th anniversary of Bruce's death. The search now begins for the right actor to play Bruce, last portrayed in the Hollywood biopic "Dragon" by Jason Scott Lee (who is of no relation despite his name). Since his death, Bruce Lee's story has been much abused by film makers and exploited in a variety of trashy productions, the worst of which is undoubtedly the Shaw Brothers' "Bruce Lee and I" which revolves around the confessions of his supposed mistress Betty Ting, who also stars as herself in one of the most hilariously self-serving performances ever.

Heath Ledger Is The Joker?

For months, gossip has been circulating who would play The Joker in the "Batman Begins" sequel which will concentrate on the Clown Prince of Crime.

Now, Latino Review who first revealed that Brandon Routh was going to be the new Superman, has heard from a very trusted source that the offer last night was officially made to Heath Ledger to star as The Joker in the sequel.

Seems an unusual choice, much younger than expected considering other mentioned names have included Robin Williams and Paul Bettany. The tall and lanky Ledger has proven himself to be a solid awards-calibre actor who can disappear into a performance.

Playing evil though, certainly something he hasn't done before.

Del Toro's a Deadman - Bringing the comic to screen

Guillermo del Toro is reportedly teaming up with producer Don Murphy's Angry Films to help bring the DC comic Deadman. Industry insider mag The Hollywood Reporter scoops that Del Toro is currently in talks to develop the adaptation which he would co-produce with Murphy and Susan Montford.

Deadman first appeared in 1967 in a Strange Adventures strip by Arnold Drake and Carmine Infantino. The series is best known for a 7-issue run by artist Neal Adams.

The comic's title character is the ghost of a circus acrobat named Boston Brand, who was murdered while performing on the trapeze by an unknown killer. Deadman has the power to possess any living thing, a power granted him by a Hindu goddess. While pursing his killer, Deadman uses his powers to help others.

THR says that a search for screenwriters is underway. Del Toro says he may direct the film if his schedule clears, but he's currently planning on serving as producer.

"[Deadman]," he says, "has great supernatural elements and is one of the more off-kilter superheroes. What I like is that it has some of the canon of horror films but it has a quest and the heroics in the more traditional superhero roots. It's a great combination that is not very common to superheroes."

Saw III Cuts Loose
Lionsgate debuted new footage from their forthcoming horror flick Saw III at Comic-Con International in San Diego on Thursday. The clip accompanied a panel attended by cast members Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith, writer Leigh Whannell, director Darren Lynn Bousman and producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules.

The footage shown was a scene where an ex-convict named Troy is chained inside what appears to be a classroom. Troy is the unfortunate pawn in Jigsaw's latest game. "This game will take place in a room not much bigger than the room you've spent most of your life in," Jigsaw advises the frightened ex-con via a television feed. "Despite all the privileges you were given at birth, you returned to prison again and again."

Troy has chains pierced through his hands, feet, lip, chest and back. "It's time to see how far you're willing to go to break those chains, once and for all," Jigsaw says.

A beat-the-clock scenario then ensues where the ex-con must rips the chains from his flesh as the seconds run down. Blood gushes from the horrific wounds the ex-con inflicts upon himself while trying to escape his grim fate.

Lionsgate also confirmed that the teaser trailer for Saw III will debut in theaters with the August 4th release of the studio's The Descent.

Custodes Bestiae / Lidrs cuadrade di tr

Twitch received an email a couple days back and was asked to take a look at the new DVD releases of a pair of films by young Italian film maker Lorenzo Bianchini, a man who has built something of a cult following - and made a major fan of Bava / Argento / Fulci screenwriter Dardano Sacchetti - based on his two ultra low budget feature films, Custodes Bestiae (Keepers of the Beast) and Lidrs cuadrade di tr (Square root of three). Bianchini has turned enough heads, in fact, that some of the people involved with the Udine Far East Film Festival have launched their own DVD label (Centro Espressioni Cinematografiche) to get these things out there.

Severance official website and trailer

The official website for Christopher Smith's Severance is now online, and there's a downloadable trailer for the movie on that site. (Thanks to James Moran for this information.) Pathe Distribution Ltd. is scheduled to release the movie theatrically in the U.K. on August 25th.

The screenplay for Severance was written by Moran and Smith, based on a story by the former. The movie stars Danny Dyer, Laura Harris, Tim McInnerny, Toby Stephens, Claudie Blakley, Andy Nyman, and Babou Ceesay.

Below is a synopsis for Severance from the website of international sales agent HanWay Films Limited.

International arms company Palisade Defence rewards its European sales division with a weekend of paint-balling and office-bonding, at a corporate retreat.

The team of six arrives to find the accommodation is more basic than they were expecting and by the end of their first night, company playboy Harris has convinced everyone that the resort was the site of a gruesome massacre involving a group of deranged yet highly-trained soldiers. The one person who doesn't believe him is computer boffin Steve but maybe that's because he's taken a batch of LSD and is convinced that the local deer are insulting him.

The next day the team is horrified to discover the weekend agenda has changed as they are stalked by a crack team of war-crazed soldiers with revenge on their task-list. In a fight for their survival they discover one business motto is true... 'kill or be killed'.

Sin City Miller Gets Into The Spirit
Writer/artist Frank Miller has agreed to adapt/direct The Spirit based on the Will Eisner comic strip character for Odd Lot Entertainment and Batfilm Prods.

Miller co-directed Sin City, adapted from his graphic novel with Robert Rodriguez. Deborah Del Prete and Gigi Pritzker's Odd Lot are financing The Spirit. The weekly comic strip debuted in 1940, focusing on a masked detective, believed dead, who uses a mausoleum as his home base.

DC Comics has reprinted most of the original comic series in hardcover. Odd Lot bought rights to "The Spirit" from Eisner in 2004.

"I intend to be extremely faithful to the heart and soul of the material," said Miller. "But it won't be nostalgic. It will be much scarier than people expect."

Filming is expected to begin Spring 2007. Benjamin Melniker is exec producing. Odd Lot's Linda McDonough and Batfilm's F.J. DeSanto will co-produce.

Signourney vs Arnold 2 set to Roll
Apparently the first Alien vs Preditor film was a bigger enough success to warrant a sequel or it's official...Hollywood has completely ran out of ideas!

This is not 100% confirmed yet however, but HNR have it on good authority that the deal is nearly done and Alien vs Preditor 2 will be lensing in Vancouver sometime late this year.

Paul W.S Anderson has apparently turned over the directing duties to Greg and Colin Strause, although he's still an active producer and has contributed to the script (which may or may not be a good thing).

No word on casting yet, but one can imagine Sanaa Lathan will be reprising her role 20th Century Fox will handle domestic distribution.

Three Dead Actors - Day remake casts leads
According to Variety, the ranks of the Day of the Dead cast are filling up. Ving Rhames, Mena Suvari and Nick Cannon have joined the project, which is a remake of George Romero's 1985 horror fave.

Steve Miner (Halloween H2O) will direct for Millennium Films, Emmett/Furla Films and Taurus Entertainment.

Jeffrey Reddick (Final Destination) penned the screenplay adaptation. Variety reminds us that Day of the Dead "revolves around a group of military personnel and scientists who hole up in a bunker while flesh-eating zombies run riot above ground. But the bunker isn't safe for long."

This film will not be Rhames' first time battling zombies in a Romero remake. He also starred in Dawn of the Dead.

The Host Remake
In news sure to delight cinema fans the world over, it looks as though Korean director Bong Joon-ho's creature feature "The Host" is to be remade by Hollywood. Magnolia Pictures currently hold the rights for the film's U.S. release, with several major studios now battling for the honour of 'revisioning' it for the poor Western viewers likely to be confused by the cultural nuances of a tale about a sewer dwelling mutant. Sales agent Cineclick Asia have reported that they expect the remake rights to have been settled within the next few months. Equally depressing news is that Bong himself is apparently being wooed by Hollywood studios and has had several offers to direct, although he is currently still set to follow his monster hit with a small scale drama and a big-budget adaptation of the French sci-fi comicbook "Le transperceneige".

"Hanbando" Breaks Opening Record in Korea
The Korean film "Hanbando" has broken records on its domestic release, attracting 230,538 viewers on its opening day. Although it marks the film as the most popular local release for some time, it was surpassed by the two Hollywood blockbusters "The Da Vinci Code", which drew 238,599 viewers, and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest”, which drew 237,000. The 10 billion won film was directed by Kang Woo-seok, also responsible for "Silmido", and has been controversial for its nationalistic stance and depiction of Korean reunification against the backdrop of present day Japanese aggression and invasion.

28 Weeks Later Buzz
During an off-camera chat during Saturday's taped interviews for Miami Vice, IGN FilmForce got the chance to ask British actress Naomie Harris about 28 Weeks Later, Fox Atomic's planned sequel to the zombie sensation 28 Days Later.

The actress admitted that she had no idea whether she'd be in the movie or not but she did reveal that she was recently on a London-to-L.A. flight with 28 producer Andrew Macdonald, who advised her that there may be a part for her in the sequel.

Harris expressed interest in reprising her role as the tough survivor Selana but she did not know anything further about the sequel. She said the script is still being written (by Rowan Joffe) so it is possible that Selena might not end up in it.

28 Weeks Later will be directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.

Snakes On A Plane, but without previews
Variety reports that when New Line Cinema opens the highly anticipated SNAKES ON A PLANE in over 2,500 theaters nationwide on August 18, it will do so without holding advance screenings for critics or other press. While this has traditionally been a practice employed with movies for which negative reviews are expected, New Line claims it's being done here in deference to the fans who have made SNAKES an Internet sensation. "Understanding that they would be the driving force behind the film," the company says of the people behind countless fan sites, blogs, unofficial tie-ins, etc., "we decided early on they should be the first to see it. They will have the opportunity on Thursday evening, Aug. 17, at 10 p.m. shows across the country. We are not planning any advance media or promotional screenings prior to that." That means that while daily papers likely won't be able to run reviews of SNAKES the next day.

he no-screening policy has been employed with numerous genre releases this year, most notably by Sony, which eschewed advance showings of UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION, WHEN A STRANGER CALLS and SILENT HILL and saw those movies (along with the unscreened comedy THE BENCHWARMERS) hit in the $20-million range in their opening weekends. The practice was also utilized less successfully by Hollywood Pictures with STAY ALIVE and Lionsgate with SEE NO EVIL.

A New Trailer For Thai Fantasy Epic The Legend of Sudsakorn
A new trailer for The Legend of Sudsakorn - the latest from the Thai production house responsible for The Tiger Blade and Vengeance - has turned up online and while the effects are certainly not up to WETA standards this has several things you'll not be seeing in Narnia any time soon: cackling old men in loin clothes, some weird lizard-horse thing, not to mention more blood in the trailer alone than you're likely to see in the entire Narnia franchise. By LOTR standards this is going to fall short, but take it as a blast back to Krull era sword and sorcery and it could be a lot of fun ... here's s ynopsis taken from the website of young star Charlie Trairat:

Sudsakorn is a curious young man, raised in the ancient traditions of magic by his mystical grandfather. He never knew his father, only a void where the loving memories should be. His mother, a beautiful mermaid is pained by his sadness, so sends him on a quest to find his father. Armed with his grandfather's magical weaponry Sudsakorn sets off into the mysterious world of yore on his trusty steed, Ma Nin Mangkorn, a half dragon, half horse. What starts as a simple quest soon turns into an amazing adventure, and a fight for survival against the dark forces of the ancient world.

Old Siam is a terrifying and dangerous place, especially for wizards and warlocks. Danger soon crosses Sudsakorn's path to finding his father. Sudsakorn encounters a heinous and deadly creature, and must use his magical powers to defeat the foul beast, and continue his journey. The display of power doesn't go unnoticed and Sudsakorn is persuaded to fight monsters and demons by the king of an ancient city.

With his new found mission to protect the innocent, and slay all evil that plagues the land, his quest to find his father is put on hold. But can Sudsakorn's power last, or will the forces of evil defeat him before he finds his father? Sudsakorn must fight to stay alive, before he too falls victim the treachery of the ancient world.

Wesley Snipes, zombie hunter? Or Wesley Snipes, zombie? The producers of Gallowwalker are playing coy with the details. But now that their hand has been called by a leaked casting call notice they've agreed to let some bits out. Here's what we know:

The film is titled Gallowwalker and is slated to be directed by Andrew Goth with Wesley Snipes in the lead. It is a western, by which I mean an honest-to-god Sergio Leone style western and not City Slickers. It features zombies and lots of them. Some sites have reported that Snipes will be playing a character called KAOS, which is not correct: his character has not been revealed anywhere and will not be until a Gallowwalker comic is released somewhere prior to the film's launch.

We also have a first look at the film's teaser one sheet. For those with crappy monitor resolution, here's the text from the front of that:

When a man takes a life, you take his in return. That's the way it's always been. A gunman knows too well the ways of vengeance. Fast and furious, he has killed every man who has crossed him. But his gift with a gun comes with a curse. All those who die by his hand will return. Enter the world of GALLOWWALKER, where vengeance lives forever.

More filmmakers into (and out of) Fearmongers
FEARMONGERS, the series of one-hour horror movies being put together by creator/producer/directors Ryan Nicholson and Nick Palumbo, has added and subtracted a few names from its roster of filmmakers. Nicholson gave Fango the scoop that Ruggero Deodato (pictured left), the Italian creator of the infamous CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, is the latest addition to the lineup. “He’ll be directing the third one, after Nick and myself,” Nicholson tells Fango. In addition, the duo gave Fango the scoop that Graeme Whifler (pictured right), who’s been shocking festival audiences with his new NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH (which next plays at Montreal’s Fantasia), has joined the roster.

As for those departing the project, the duo inform us, “We regrettably announce that Jeff [SATAN’S LITTLE HELPER] Lieberman is no longer attached to FEARMONGERS due to contractual reasons. We feel Mr. Lieberman is a great filmmaker and wish him the best with future projects.” And Palumbo adds, “Sage Stallone and David [CHAOS] DeFalco are also out of the project for similar reasons.” Check out the FEARMONGERS panel at the East Coast Weekend of Horrors convention, taking place September 29-October 1 at the Meadowlands Crowne Plaza hotel in Secaucus, NJ.

Mignola’s Screw-On Head premieres on-line
A number of years back, there was a comic by Mike (HELLBOY) Mignola that had the power to make this writer laugh like no other. Absurd in its premise, the book contained a humor that ran at a high level of random, all the while delivering the usual spooky goods we’ve come to know Mignola for. That comic was THE AMAZING SCREW-ON HEAD, a story about an American agent who is, quite simply, a metal head who can screw into any body he creates and works for President Abraham Lincoln. With the assistance of his manservant Mr. Groin, Head would try to thwart the evil plans of Emperor Zombie.

Well, the Sci Fi Channel has been at work on an animated HEAD adventure. The 22-minute pilot episode, featuring the voices of Paul Giamatti, David Hyde Pierce and Molly Shannon, has found life over at Sci Fi’s site (click here to go directly to that page) and it’s loaded with everything Mignola delivered in HEAD's Eisner Award-winning 2002 debut. You’ve got werewolves, mummies, vampires, an unspeakable evil contained within a turnip and a few old ladies with a chimp. Sci Fi, obviously skeptical about this curious property they’ve developed before taking it further, asks visitors on that page to fill out an on-line survey after watching HEAD, so let ’em know what you think!

Right At Your Door teaser
Acquired by Lions Gate at this year's Sundance for nearly $3 million for worldwide distribution rights, Chris Gorak's RIGHT AT YOUR DOOR is set to be released in the UK on September 8th. The film stars Mary McCormack, Rory Cochrane and Tony Perez in this thriller, and we've received the link to the film's teaser trailer, which looks pretty good for such a short clip. Hopefully we get more from the film as it's release gets closer, including the dates for when we get it over on our side of the pond.

The film story centres around Los Angeles after a series of dirty bombs are detonated, sending toxic ash across the city. Brad (Cochrane) mistakenly quarantines his own wife, Lexi (McCormack), outside their new home by sealing himself inside the humble abode. With the city going nuts (it is LA, after all) and Martial Law in effect, Brad and Lexi struggle to survive with little supply, limited time and no information on what the hell to do, all the while separated by thin doors and thinner sheets of plastic. When 'help' finally arrives, it's anything but.

Sid Haig Set to Helm 'Bubba the Redneck Werewolf'
Sid Haig (Spider baby, Devil's Rejects) is both directing and starring in a live-action feature film based on a comic book series called Bubba the Redneck Werewolf. Sid tells B-D that pre-production should begin next month in Orlando, FL. Bubba's creator, Mitch Hyman, is writing the script and the special effects makeup will be done by Barry Anderson, who worked on Land of the Dead as well as creating the sculpture for all of the Ripley's Believe It or Not museums! Apparently even with the werewolf makeup, Mr. Haig's features will still be obvious.

"This is the story of Bubba, a dogcatcher in a small Florida town…There was a cosmetic factory that opened up in this little town and they were dumping the toxic waste into the swamps. One of the experiments they were working with was on a poodle that had Bulgarian toxic waste used on it so it could test glow in the dark mascara for the company. Well the dog got evilly intelligent and escaped. Unfortunately, they sent Bubba out after it and Bubba just got bit by the wrong dog. It’s comedy/horror. It’s just slapstick, fall down, insane comedy."

TMNT Official Turtles Title
Warner Brothers has announced that the official title for the 2007 CG Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film will be the popular abbreviation for the franchise, TMNT.

The film is currently in production at the hands of Kevin Monroe, a joint venture between Warner Brothers (who will handle domestic distribution) and The Weinstein Company (which will handle overseas).

TMNT is an adaptation of the comic originally created by Kevin Eastman in Peter Laird. Although the original comics were significantly darker, the franchise took on a kid-friendly form in the 80's in the form of a popular animated television series, a toy line and three live action films.

Snipes Taking on Zombies Next
Wesley Snipes, recently famous for his stint as the vampire-hunter Blade, has signed onto a new genre picture. According to Production Weekly, his next tough-guy assignment will be fighting undead in Gallowwalker, a thriller to be directed by Andrew Goth.

Snipes plays Kaos, the mysterious son of a nun who breaks her oath to ensure his survival. Kaos is a killer, but his mother's act brings a curse that re-animates the bodies of his victims, and naturally what they'd like is revenge. What goes around, comes around, and soon there's a zombie gang after him. Kaos gets help, though, in the form of a warrior sidekick named Fabulos.

The project is moving quickly. Filming is expected to begin next month in South Africa and Namibia. Goth's last picture (and one of his only, to date) was Cold and Dark, a horror about a parasite which turns corpses to blood-sucking monsters.

Snipes has several other films on the go, including Chasing the Dragon, a drug-crime thriller set in Taiwan, and The Shooter, a spy thriller. Those are due out in 2006 and 2007, respectively, but no specific dates have been set. Snipes's career has taken a few odd turns of late, and while Gallowwalker sounds interesting, we can hope it's not destined for the straight-to-video aisle like The Detonator, Snipes's most recent headliner.

Fearless Release Date
It looks like we were wrong yesterday about FEARLESS coming out on August 4. Although the FEARLESS website says that Jet Li's latest flick will be released on 8/4, the film's publicist says it's being released on September 22nd, and there's another official website (an even more official official website) that lists the release as Sept. 22. Which now puts it in the position of coming after The Weinstein Company's release of THE PROTECTOR (aka TOM YUM GOONG).

Death Proof To Lense Soon
Rosario Dawson recently spoke at the Clerks 2 press junket with IGN. There she mentioned some details about Tarantinos half of Grind House, Death Proof.

"I haven't shot anything, but we start rehearsal in August and we start shooting in September and that's the double part of the double feature. Robert already finished his…

[Robert's] part, Grind House, it's a zombie film… Quentin's part is called Death Proof and they're both 60 minutes. They're going to release them together. It's like an old school 70's kind of thing. It's gonna have scratchy-looking film and weird smash cuts and fake trailers in between and just really awesome stuff. That's more of like a gear head movie, gear head slasher flick…"

Most of it we have heard about but the mention that Rodriguez's is finished and that Tarantino will begin filming in September is great news. So it looks like they are on track to make that April 6th, 2007 deadline.

First photo and report: Wrong Turn 2
Producer Jeff (FREDDY’S NIGHTMARES) Freilich and first-time director Joe Lynch, along with Fox Home Entertainment, recently invited Fango to the set of the direct-to-DVD sequel WRONG TURN 2 in Vancouver, B.C. The follow-up continues the story of a family of cannibalistic mountain folk who survive by killing and pillaging anything and, more importantly, anyone who ventures into their path. This time out, their targets are the cast of a reality series being shot in the same isolated mountains from the first film. The show, a postapocalyptic-themed elimination concept (think SURVIVOR meets WORST CASE SCENARIO), comes to the desolate landscape with no one in the production being aware of what lies in wait for them up in "them thar hills."

"I came onto this project as a fan of the genre," Lynch tells Fango. "I told Fox, 'Look, this is the type of movie that a fan wants to rally behind.' Back in the ’80s, people were like, 'Dude, did you see CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST? Didja see I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE?' Sure, these movies are exploitation, but if we can make a film that has good characters and a decent storylineone which puts our characters in precarious positions and makes the audience think, 'Oh, shit! What would I do in that situation?' -then we’re doing our job." The film’s cast is a strong one made up of young but seasoned genre actors, including Erica (TEXAS CHAINSAW remake) Leehrsen, Texas Battle and Crystal Lowe from FINAL DESTINATION 3, Matthew Currie Holmes, Ken (FREDDY VS. JASON) Kirzinger and the distinguished Mr. Henry Rollins.

While the film is connected in both theme and tone to the original, the filmmakers is striving to make WRONG TURN 2 a movie unto itself. "We’re going to bring a different twist to it," says Battle, who plays the character Jake. "The start of this movie is really going to grab you. It gets straight to the excitement, right from the get-go. From the first time you see the teaser, you aren’t going anywhere. This movie is going to be crazy."

To even the most casual of observers, the filmmakers clearly seem driven to make something special: a film that addresses topics which are a bit more cerebral than your standard popcorn movie fare. "This movie is about survival," Leerhsen (who plays Nina) says as she wipes fake blood from her small, pale hands, "for both the cannibals and for us. Who’s the strongest? I actually think that there’s a good message in that. It’s a need for all of us to remember our mortality… so that we value it."

Hisayasu Sato's 'Rafureshia' (1995), R1 USA DVD August 29th 2006
The third Sato film from Artsmagic, the third in their new 'Shocking Pink' line of releases.

Already released on R1 USA DVD, the first, was Sato's 'Hard Focus' - review of that is still on the front of the page down there in with reviews smashed-out for the forum originally, great film but very odd and certainly another style of Pink to whats generally seen the light of day so far on DVD in America; worth noting the Artsmagic DVD seems to set a higher standard than previous releases with a transfer less likely to be termed over-dark as they have sometimes in the past. The lengthy interview on the DVD (Jason Gray?!) is essential, very thorough, thought through, and sheds a lot of necessary light on a very deceptive genre of movie and a very interesting figure in Sato himself; nice work....

Pang Brothers to Take a Break From Horror
The Pang Brothers have said in an interview that they plan to avoid making films with any kind of supernatural theme for the next couple of years. The two have now reached an international level of recognition and success where their films are presold to overseas companies even before being completed on the strength of their names alone, making them instantly profitable, which pretty much enables them to make anything they want. What their statement really means is unclear, though the two will certainly be returning to horror for their solo efforts "Diary" and "Forest of Death" which are set to begin shooting soon.

They have said that they would like to try making a gangster thriller with some psychological elements, though this would not represent much of a departure from the like of their earlier "Bangkok Dangerous", which is soon to be the subject of a Hollywood remake. The brothers have recently completed work on their Hollywood debut, "The Messengers", which is now in post-production and is due out early next year. Their latest effort, "Re-Cycle" was well received at the Cannes Film Festival and was reported to be more stylish than their usual films, with more in the way of imaginative computer effects and delving into the realm of the fantastic.

Rest Stop on DVD
Rest Stop
First look at DVD art as well as the specs for REST STOP, the debut feature film from Warner Home Video's new Raw Feed genre banner. This direct-to-DVD effort, shot on a budget of roughly $5 million and written/directed by John (SUPERNATURAL) Shiban, is slated to hit stores October 17 in both R-rated and unrated editions.

Newcomer Jaimie Alexander headlines this back-to-basics slasher opus that follows a young woman's horrific experiences at a lonesome roadside rest stop, where those she encounters cannot be trusted and a killer in a yellow pickup prowls the area. A pair of Joeys round out the cast: First up, you've got Joey Mendicino from MTV's THAT 70's HOUSE as the heroine's boyfriend, and then there's Joey Lawrence, a dude who, let's face it, is most recognizable from the sitcom BLOSSOM, as a cop.

REST STOP, the first in a trinity of fright features to shoot for the Feed label this year, will be accompanied by two alternate endings and a trailer on the R-rated disc. The unrated edition will contain those extras along with the bonus features Scotty's Home Movies, a twisted look through the eyes of the film's malformed titular character from the film, and On the Bus, a close-up look at the villain's grisly activities, for those riding the high of the recent torture-horror trend. Retail price for each version will be $24.98.

It's also worth noting that REST STOP will also make its premiere on the Sci Fi Channel in early October (date to be determined).

Kurtzman's BURIED ALIVE and RAGE updates
Robert Kurtzman, director of the Dark Lot Entertainment horror film BURIED ALIVE, passed on to Fango the exclusive shot above, featuring SAW veteran Tobin Bell in a scene with actress Lindsey Scott. He also sent along the pics below of the movie's Desert Witch (Beth Biasella) and himself on the set. "It has been a experience working with the talented cast and crew here in New Mexico," says Kurtzman of the film, in which a group of youths run afoul of supernatural evil when one tries to unearth a cache of riches. "Collaborating with director of photography Tom [FEAST] Callaway has been a reel highlight for me. The film is a visual feast filled with creepy setpieces. I really want to capture the feel of films like BLACK SABBATH, the old-women segment in particular that freaked me out when I was a kid and still give me chills to this day."

In addition, Fango has learned that actress Erin Brown has joined the cast of THE RAGE, the shocker Kurtzman is directing for his Precinct 13 Entertainment company. Brown, who previously appeared in SHADOW: DEAD RIOT and MASTERS OF HORROR's SICK GIRL and will soon be seen in Chris Sivertson's THE LOST, will play the heroine Kat (replacing previously cast Carmella DeCesare) when the second round of shooting on THE RAGE begins in August. Jessica Alba in talks for The Eye
Lionsgate is picking up Cruise/Wagner-produced remake The Eye out of turnaround from Paramount and is in talks with Jessica Alba to star and French helmers David Moreau and Xavier Palud to direct. Variety says the film will shoot this winter.

The Eye is a thriller about a cornea transplant recipient who sees disturbing images in the mirror that send her on a quest to find out what happened to the eye's previous owner. The original was made in Hong Kong by Thai directing brothers Danny and Oxide Pang.

Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner persuaded Paramount to buy the remake rights in 2002 and got close to making it there with Rene Zellweger. When Zellweger dropped out, the project lost its momentum and the studio put it into turnaround.

Alba is in talks to make The Eye her next picture after the Fantastic Four sequel. Moreau and Palud, who last directed the French thriller Ils, will make The Eye their first U.S. picture.

Horror on The Farm
Horror scribe Scott Nicholson returns this month with the release of his fifth novel, The Farm, from Pinnacle Books. In what the New York Times Book Review refers to as "a smoothly engineered supernatural entertainment in the more rambunctious American style of Stephen King," Nicholson once again hopes to thrill audiences and create chills-a-plenty.

Continuing with his niche of "Appalachian-Gothic," the story is set in the town of Todd, North Carolina. Details at this point are sketchy, but Nicholson has revealed that the story deals with religious sects, bloodthirsty scarecrows, ghosts, and even man-eating goats. Yes, goats. Still, according to Nicholson, the story is, at its heart, about the relationship between a mother and her daughter. The mother, he explains, has married and moved out of the city to keep her daughter away from bad influences.

"Except bad influences come in many forms," he says. "When a herd of carnivorous goats are watching you from the dark throat of the barn, you're probably better off taking your chances with drugs, gangs, and pollution."

If it is as good as Nicholson's previous works, it should be a great read. Nicholson's books include The Red Church, The Harvest, The Manor, and The Home, all of which have met with critical acclaim and cemented his place in the upper echelon of horror authors. The Farm is slated for a July, 2006 release.

Sin City 2 Awaits Jolie
IGN FilmForce spoke with the lovely Rosario Dawson earlier today at the junket for Clerks II. What many may not realize about Dawson is that, at heart, she's just a geek like the rest of us. Except that, well, instead of reading about the upcoming cool stuff, she's actually in them. She also isn't too hard on the eyes.

Dawson has a number of intriguing projects in the pipeline, including some genre picks that should make the geeks salivate.

The actress is currently prepping for the Tarantino half of the 70's-style horror double feature, Death Proof, which will run 60 minutes and serve as one half of the double feature with Robert Rodriguez's Grind House.

After shooting the Elmore Leonard-based Killshot, which Tarantino also produced, Dawson was slated to shoot Sin City 2 next, but new cast-mate Angelina Jolie's pregnancy put production on a temporary halt.

Sin City 2 does not yet have a start date. "I don't know," says Dawson. "I think, I'm doing Death Proof in August and September and I know that just finally, Angelina [Jolie] just finished having her baby…"

Jolie had been rumored for the part, but never confirmed. "I'm pretty sure [she's in it]. That's what we've basically been holding out on, because we were supposed to start that last year or earlier. I think he wanted to do that sooner rather than later, so that will probably be coming up soon…"

Grind House is currently in the final stages of pre-production, but Dawson promises a start date is near. "No, I haven't shot anything, but we start rehearsal in August and we start shooting in September and that's the double part of the double feature.

Porn 'anime' boasts big U.S. beachhead
The popularity of Japanese animation overseas was again highlighted in Anime Expo 2006 in California earlier this month, but a growing boom in the genre's pornographic segment is raising eyebrows among the world's fans of Pokemon and other less-graphic content.

"The best-selling product overseas now is a pornographic makeover of 'Gundam Seed,' " said Masuzo Furukawa of Mandarake Inc., referring to a popular Japanese animation....

Pink in 'Catacombs' horror

Pop/Rock star Pink has just started filming a new horror flick called Catacombs, about a group of friends stalked undar Paris' famous left bank. Apparently the singer is a huge fan of the horror genre and had this to say to Billboard magazine. "It's pretty intense. It's not just a slasher-type, scary movie, it's also psychological and shows how mean and cruel siblings can be to one another. I liked that part of it." The film, co-starring Shannyn Sossamon, is being written and directed by filmmakers Tomm Coker and David Elliot.

"The Host" Heads for Stiges
Bong Jun-ho's rabidly anticpated creature feature "The Host" has been invited to screen in competition at the 39th Sitges International Film Festival, which will be held in Spain from October 6th later this year. Korean cinema has a history of doing well at the festival, with actress Lee Yeong-ae winning the Best Actress award last year for “Sympathy for Lady Vengeance” and director Yim Phil-sung winning the Orient Express award for “Antarctic Journal”. The film is due for release in its native Korea on 27th July, after a very successful debut at Cannes, and it is hoped that it will manage to break the hold Hollywood blockbusters have had on the domestic box office in recent weeks.

Hills Have Eyes sequel update
British director Michael J. Bassett, whose WILDERNESS has been winning raves at international genre festivals, will not be directing the Wes and Jonathan Craven-scripted HILLS HAVE EYES remake/sequel (premake?). “I met with Wes and they asked me, but I’m into another project and schedules didn’t allow it,” Bassett, who will introduce WILDERNESS at Montreal’s Fantasia festival this month, tells Fango. German-born director Martin (60 SECONDS) Weisz, who has helmed over 350 music videos (for such artists as Brandy, Puff Daddy, Korn, Live, Crazytown, Sisqo, Nickelback, Fuel, Mel B, JC Chasez, etc.) will now tackle the second HILLS. In addition, Pluto actor Michael Bailey Smith (pictured) will be returning in the follow-up (due next March from Fox Searchlight), even though his character died in the last desert outing; this time, Smith will play the mutants’ new leader.

The next war of the monsters to take place in Brooklyn this August
While most monster fights are relegated to the theater or television screen, kaiju fans in New York will have a chance to see some live city-crushing monster mayhem, up close and in person as KAIJU BIG BATTEL returns to Brooklyn next month. A hybrid of Japanese monster movies, pro wrestling, music, and lowbrow pop culture, the next KAIJU BIG BATTEL will feature more than 20 kaiju fighting for control of the earth as the Kaiju Commissioner tries to finally put a stop to the villainous Dr. Cube. Opening the show will be the Japanese action comic punks called Peelander-Z

KAIJU BIG BATTEL’s popularity continues to grow, and the event has been enjoying a great deal of exposure lately from G4TV’s daily “Action Blast” reports as well as the recently released OTAKU UNITE! DVD. Last month saw the special “Someone Must Die!” BATTEL at the Anime Boston convention, which went over big with an audience weaned on seizure-inducing “pocket monsters” and tentacle-bound schoolgirls.

The next KAIJU BIG BATTEL will take place at the Warsaw in Greenpoint, which is located at 261 Driggs Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11222. The all-ages event opens at 8pm on Friday, August 4. Tickets are now available through Ticketmaster. For more information on KAIJU BIG BATTEL check out the official press release from Studio Kaiju.

"Sha Po Lang" and New Pang Brothers' Films Heading Straight to DVD
In disappointing news, it looks as though Wilson Yip's acclaimed martial arts cop thriller "Sha Po Lang" will be going straight to DVD in the U.S., arriving via the Weinstein's Dragon Dynasty label on September 12th, despite having generated considerable buzz at numerous festivals and screenings. The film is set to suffer the same fate in France, being released through Pathe's Angel Star label, a fact which sadly suggests that it won't be getting any kind of theatrical release at all in the West. In other news, Image entertainment have picked up the U.S. release rights for the Pang Brothers' "Re-Cycle", "Diary" and "Forest of Death", all of which will almost certainly also be going straight to DVD.

J-Horror Theater - Retribution
The fourth movie in the J-Horror Theater hexalogy is Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Retribution (current English working title). It's scheduled to premire at the 39th Sitges - International Film Festival of Catalonia in Spain in October.

The screenplay for Retribution was written by Kurosawa. The movie apparently stars Kji Yakusho, Manami Konishi, Tsuyoshi Ihara, Hiroyuki Hirayama, Joe Odagiri, and Ry Kase.

Here's a synopsis for Retribution from the production: "Detective Yoshioka is haunted by the image of a woman in a red dress and caught in a terror that he himself might be a killer of the serial-killer case he chases after. Is his memory twisted? The grudge of the dead comes to this life and roar as 'Shriek' [former English working title] and this present life starts to shake."

"Apartment" Fails to Impress
Unfortunately, it looks as though Korean director Ahn Byung-gi's eagerly anticpated Summer horror blockbuster "Apartment" may be a bit of a letdown, at least according to The Korean Times. The review berates it for an overly familiar approach, stating that "it reveals its weakness after the first half, losing originality and depending on cliches during crucial scary moments". Apparently the film, which revolves around a young woman (played by actress Ko So-young) who discovers that people are being killed when the lights go off at 9:56 p.m every night, falls back on the usual electronic noises and sudden appearances of ghosts for cheap frights, with the final nail in the coffin being a bewildering climax overloaded with exposition and flashbacks. With the modern Asian ghost genre having just about been done to death over the last few years, this is perhaps unsurprising, though it stands as a disappointment coming from one of the founders of the form.

More Host News
Bong Joon-Ho had his Korean press screening of THE HOST around the Fourth of July and posts continue to spray out like spittle and hit the internet with a sizzle. You can read some insta-reactions over on Korean Film.org's discussion board and you can read a longer, less specific, sort of vague article about the experience on Scribblings of the Metropolitan.

Some fun facts: 1500 monster designs were rejected before director Bong settled on the current one. And Paul Lazar (SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, LORENZO'S OIL) has a small role in the movie.

You'll also see raves tossed around for Bong's first movie, BARKING DOGS NEVER BITE (sometimes called FLANDER'S DOG). I strongly recommend that anyone with any interest in Bong's work check it out. You can read a longer review here

Li plans to work with a Hong Kong composer on the score, and this is her first feature film in 3 years (since BAOBER, in fact). Based on the web novel, DIVERGENCE, the script was written by Simon Sun.

TONY LEUNG & TAKESHI KANESHIRO
Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Takeshi Kaneshiro are starring together in CONFESSION OF PAIN the new film from the INFERNAL AFFAIRS/INITIAL D duo of Alan Mak and Andrew Lau. Set in Hong Kong, the movie has two conflicting plots and three conflicting titles. Media Asia says that Tony Leung and the two directors are working on a movie called BEHIND THE SIN about a guy who helps a friend investigate his father-in-law's death, while Andrew Lau said he was working on a movie called THE WOUNDED CITY with Leung Chiu-wai playing a bad cop working with a drug lord and Takeshi Kaneshiro playing a good cop out to bust him. Monkeypeaches speculates that they are in fact the same movie.

And that there's a poster for CONFESSION OF PAIN, another title for the Leung/Kaneshiro film which, interestingly enough, isn't showing the Hong Kong skyline even though the flick is supposedly set there. Lazy artwork, or a clue?

Mummy 3 Chatter
IGN FilmForce recently paid a visit to the Mexico set of Resident Evil: Extinction where, in-between talking about the third installment of the videogame-to-film franchise, actor Oded Fehr spoke about the possibility of The Mummy 3.

"The Mummy movies are what turned me into a working actor. I love them. I think they're great adventure, fun movies," Fehr began. "I would love to do another one, if they did one I'm in, but from what I know, I spoke to Stephen Sommers about six months ago or whatever. He called me and he said the writing he's not involved in the writing process I don't think they're writing one that is very different."

"That's a totally different time. Rachel [Weisz] and Brendan [Fraser] are in it, I think, but it's a totally different style. I think it takes place in a different place and I think they're the only ones they planned to come back. But I have no idea what's happened since. But I love The Mummy movies and would have done another one, of course. I feel like I owe The Mummy movies my career."

A while back we heard that Savage Dog Films had started production on SERAPHIM, a movie about bad things that happen when you go camping. Today The Arrow got word from writer/director Lennie Overgaard that the flick has wrapped, and is still aiming for that October 13th DVD release!

He was also kind enough to send some images along from the film, which showcase a bunch of teens camping and whatnot... Pretty cool stuff, and just enough to keep ya interested.

According to Overgaard, the film stars Jannike Olofsson, Galjaar Nerway, Madelene Nord and John Falk in the lead roles as their characters find themselves stuck in the middle of the final battle between good and evil - angels vs. demons.

Dog Soldiers Sequel
In this month’s issue of Rue Morgue (issue number 58, July 2006), there is not only an article of Neil Marshall’s The Descent but also one of the resurgence of the British horror scene. A sidebar by Tom Murray is all about Dog Soldiers: Fresh Meat, the long delayed sequel to Marshall’s excellent werewolf picture Dog Soldiers.

Director Rob Green who previously helmed The Bunker (which is a fairly decent suspense horror film) is at the helm of this sequel. The story (which Green has written with Eric Miller) takes place shortly after the first, Pvt. Cooper is found wandering the forests by the American Special Forces group he and his squad was suppose to be going against. His story not believed he is held onto and a little while later a survivor of Captain Ryan’s unit comes up and guess what? They along with some others have and turned into werewolves.

Director Rob Green: "Some of the characters actually love being a werewolf because they are so powerful the ultimate killing machine…it’s a fun spin on the traditional angle that being a werewolf is a curse which damns the person the person no matter what. We also have a very savage she-wolf in the climax who faces against the leader of the pack of Dog Soldiers."

Now, we all know that Fresh Meat has long been on the rack, collecting dust but finally it looks like cameras wills start rolling this fall and Green explains why:

"We need longer nights for shooting because about 70 percent of the film is set at night. We want to shoot during a Hunter’s Moon when the moon appears three times its normal size."

First Official Stills from Resident Evil: Extinction
Two "official" stills have made their way online and are crystal clear - one of Milla Jovovich as Alice, the other of Ali Larter as Claire Redfield.

Milla Jovovich is back as Alice, and she's running with a new pack of humans, leading a caravan that's cutting through the Nevada desert on a long trek to Alaska. Hunted by the minions of the perpetually scheming Dr. Isaacs, Alice has zombies hungry for her flesh (once again) and lab rats hungry for her blood -- while Alice is hungry for only one thing: revenge...

Easter Bunny, Kill! Kill! Kill! Trailer Debuts
Fangoria last reported here on Chad (THE GHOULS) Ferrin’s EASTER BUNNY, KILL! KILL! KILL!, which puts a violent spin on the kids’ holiday favorite. Now a trailer has been posted at the movie’s MySpace page, which also includes more pics of the big-eared villain.

In the movie, a violent criminal named Remington (GHOULS’ Tim Muskatell) fools a mother into trusting him. When she leaves him home alone with her young son, he and his friends take sick pleasure in abusing the boy, who seeks comfort in his pet rabbit. One night, however, the abusers can’t find Nicholasbut an Easter Bunny-masked killer has found them, and wants bloody revenge on the boy’s tormentors! EASTER BUNNY also stars David Z. Stamp and Trent Haaga, who helped Ferrin put together the preview of the rabbit mayhem.

Buttgereit joins Fearmongers
Fango got word from Nick Palumbo, who co-created and is producing the new horror minifeature series FEARMONGERS with Ryan Nicholson, that German bad-boy filmmaker Jrg Buttgereit has joined the directors’ roster. That leaves only two of the 13 total slots to be filled, and Palumbo tells us that they should have confirmations on the final names shortly. Buttgereit is the creator of the notorious NEKROMANTIK movies and the equally graphic serial-killer study SCHRAMM and DER TODESKING (THE DEATH KING); he also created special FX for KILLER CONDOM. You can also keep tabs on FEARMONGERS at its newly opened MySpace page

Rooms for Tourists
According to the official blog for Paura Flics, the remake of Adrin Garca Bogliano's horrAR (i.e., Argentine horror) movie Rooms for Tourists (Habitaciones para turistas) for the American market is moving closer to realization. Diane Weipert (who co-wrote the screenplay for Carlos Bolado's Slo Dios sabe) has completed the first draft of the screenplay for the remake, based on the story by Adrin Garca Bogliano and his older brother Ramiro Garca Bogliano (a.k.a. the Garca Bogliano brothers).

Here are some of the changes that Weipert has made to the story: The setting has been changed from the interior of the Province of Buenos Aires to the streets of the Mississippi (which doesn't necessarily mean the State of Mississippi). The names of the five protagonists (all of them young women) have been changed from Theda, Elena, Ruth, Lydia, and Silvia to Clara, Megan, Jenna, Ruth, and Mathilda, respectively. A sixth protagonist, Rachel, has been added.

Rooms for Tourists premired at the Buenos Aires Rojo Sangre (BARS) film festival on October 30, 2004. (Note that, like Ryan Nicholson's Live Feed, it predates Eli Roth's Hostel.) Strand Releasing released it on DVD in the U.S. on April 25th.
