Battle of Wits Tops Box Office
Battle of WitsThanks to nationwide hype for the Chinese war epic "Battle of Wits," the movie's box office takings in the first weekend reached 20 million yuan across China.

However, Gao Jun from the New Film Association revealed the movie only earned 200,000 yuan at the box office takings on Monday, a significant drop from the weekend.

He added there are two weeks for the movie to go before its strongest competitor, "Curse of the Golden Flower," will hit cinemas on December 14.

The movie faces fierce competition with romantic drama "The Knot" and the newly awarded Hong kong film "After This Our Exile" coming out in later weeks.

The Sino-South-Korean-Japanese war epic film "Battle of Wits" stars Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau, Chinese actress Fan Bingbing and South Korean actor Ahn Sung-kee.

The movie is based on a Japanese comic book. The story focuses on a battle that occurred during China's historical Warring States period, when the small Liang Kingdom beat the powerful Zhao Kingdom thanks to the guidance of a wise military strategist.

Gugino Is A Hot Vamp In Rise
Carla GuginoCarla Gugino, who plays a sexy vampire in the upcoming horror movie Rise, told SCI FI Wire that the long-gestating film is finally finished and should reach theaters soon. Gugino (Night at the Museum) completed the Ghost House Pictures production before starting work on her shortlived CBS SF series Threshold, which debuted last fall and was canceled after a short run; it's now available on DVD.

"That one just has taken forever," Gugino said in an interview, referring to Rise. "I think now it's finally finished. I know that they've just finished all the scoring and all of that. It's been an incredibly long process. But I do think now it will be released in the near future. I don't know when, but it's now done-done, so that's good."

Rise was written and directed by Sebastian Gutierrez, who previously directed Gugino in Judas Kiss and Mermaid Chronicles Part I: She Creature and wrote an episode of Gugino's other shortlived ABC series Karen Sisco. Rise stars Lucy Liu as a reporter who's killed by vampires and is brought back to life and goes on a rampage against them. The film also stars Michael Chiklis (Fantastic Four), James D'Arcy (An American Haunting) and Samaire Armstrong (Stay Alive).

"Rise is a vampire film noir, and I play a vampire femme fatale named Eve," Gugino said. "So that part is very dark and sexual and interesting. And that movie is just really cool. Lucy Liu and Michael Chiklis are awesome in it." Gugino next appears in the family fantasy film Night at the Museum, playing a scholarly docent opposite Ben Stiller; it opens Dec. 20.

Fox 2000 Passes on He-Man
Dolph Lundgren as He-Man
Moviehole spoke to executive producer Rodney Ferrell (Flicka), of Fox 2000, who said that studio has let the rights to He-Man go.

"This was a project set up at Fox," said Ferrell, "but in the recent months we gave the project back to Mattel and are no longer involved."

In October of 2004, it was reported that Fox 2000 had set John Woo to direct and produce a new live-action film based on the characters in Mattel's "Masters of the Universe" line of action figures.

Originally made into an animated series in 1983, the property was also adapted into a live-action film in 1987 called Masters of the Universe, which starred Dolph Lundgren as the hero and Frank Langella as Skeletor.

Clive Barker Releases Poe's Nightmares
Clive BarkerHorror master Clive Barker is partnering with Walden Media to create an original young adult thriller centered on the ghost of Edgar Allan Poe.

Barker is set to develop the story and produce the project, with Barker's Seraphim Films' Anthony DiBlasi and Joseph Daley executive producing.

The film will revolve around a group of teenagers who attempt to uncover what happened during the last two weeks of Poe's life. They inadvertently trigger a curse that unlocks Poe's nightmares from which they must escape.

"I think we might have a chance with this project to bring the character of Poe alive for a new audience and weave his shadowy existence into the dark enchantments of his stories so that for our protagonist, and for our audience, it will be difficult to be sure where one finishes and the other takes flight," Barker said.

Scary Starlet Time Travels - Faris joins sci-fi comedy
Anna FarisWhat happens when three unpopular guys in a British pub get unwittingly tangled up in a time travel adventure with a beautiful woman from the future? That's the question Frequently Asked Questions about Time Travel sets out to answer when the farcical sci-fi comedy begins production next week.

Anna Faris, who has starred in all four Scary Movies, has the lead role in the film as a time traveler from the future who embroils the other characters in some kind of time paradox. The present-day threesome, described as two geeks and a cynic, are to be played by British comedy actors Chris O'Dowd (Roy from "The IT Crowd", Marc Wootan and Dean Lennox Kelly ("Dux").

BBC Films and HBO will be involved in distributing Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel. There's no word yet on when it will be completed and released to theaters.

Faris next stars in Mama's Boy, opposite Jon Heder, the comedy, Smiley Face, and she's rumored to be reprising her role as Cindy Campbell in a fifth installment in the Scary Movie franchise which may hit theaters in 2008.

Synapse Films acquires The Kindred
The KindredSynapse Films recently acquired the rights to THE KINDRED, the 1987 slime-monster movie by directors/co-writers Jeffrey Obrow and Stephen Carpenter starring Rod Steiger, Amanda Pays, David Allen Brooks and Kim Hunter. “Even though we still have to assess exactly what we’re going to do with the title, we plan on having it out by the end of 2007. It’s one of those great little creature movies from the ‘80s that had cool practical effects—and Amanda Pays is pretty hot too” says Don May Jr. of DVD company Synapse Films.

THE KINDRED, on which PSYCHO’s Joseph Stefano also contributed to the screenplay, is about a young man (Brooks) who goes to his deceased mother’s home with a group of friends to fulfill her dying wish that all her scientific research be destroyed. Instead, the results of those experiments prove to be alive and bent on destroying them. “We got all the original materials and checked the interpositives, and they’re perfect; it looks like the movie was shot yesterday,” May continues. “We’ve spoken to Jeff Obrow, and he’s very excited by the fact that we have the film. We’ll be presenting it in a beautiful special edition; supplements aren’t finalized at this time, but we hope to have audio commentary, a featurette and trailers, at least. Next year is the movie’s 20th anniversary, so we hope to deliver something special for the fans.”

Preacher - Comic book based series on HBO
HBO is currently developing a one hour series based on the Vertigo comic series Preacher. Mark Steven Johnson (Daredevil, Ghost Rider) is writing the pilot.

Preacher is about a down-and-out Texas preacher possessed by Genesis, a supernatural entity conceived by the unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon. Given immense powers, the preacher teamed with an old girlfriend and a hard-drinking Irish vampire and set out on a journey across America to find God - who apparently had abandoned his duties in heaven - and hold him accountable for his negligence.

Howard Deutch (Pretty in Pink) is set to direct while Johnson (see above) will be producing. More on Preacher to come.

Poltergeist Remake Coming
PoltergeistAn anonymous source told the Bloody-Disgusting website that the proposed sequel film Poltergeist: Kayeri has been shelved in favor of a shot-for-shot remake of the original 1982 film. "I've just received official confirmation that the original idea for Kayeri will not be used for the remake," the source said. "Instead, the new film will be a straight-up remake of the first film. Pretty much frame-for-frame. Just think Hills Have Eyes."

According to the site, screenwriter Clint Morris, who wrote the script for Poltergeist: Kayeri, will not be involved in the new project. The source also confirmed that original cast members Craig T. Nelson, JoBeth Williams and Zelda Rubinstein will not appear in the remake.

The original Poltergeist, produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Tobe Hooper, centered on a family who moves into a new housing development and discovers that their home is built over an ancient burial ground inhabited by angry spirits. The film spawned two theatrical sequels and a television series, which ran from 1996 to 1999.

The Host red band trailer
When you go to the movies and see trailers, they’re usually “green band” – ie, they’ve been approved for all audiences by the MPAA. Much more rare is the “red band” trailer. That’s the one only adults should see.

Now, CHUD has the "red band" trailer for The Host, the Korean creature feature that'll be coming to American theaters in January.
